To investigate the relationship between environmental factors and distribution of aquatic plants in the watersheds of Mankyung and Youngsan River, land use pattern of watershed, pollutant loading, and species diversity of aquatic plants were determined in their nine tributaries. Watershed area and river length were large in Stream Jiseokchon and Stream Whangryonggang of Youngsan River and were small in tributaries of Mankyung River. Forest areas were extensive in Gosanchon and Soyangchon of Mankyung River. Housing areas were very extensive in Chonjuchon, Iksanchon and Kwangjuchon near large cities. The loading amounts of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solid (SS), total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) were determined as ranges of 8.73 ¡ 57.14, 20.58 ¡ 121.73, 0.87 ¡ 7.82 and 0.66 ¡ 4.67 ton/day, respectively. Species diversity indices were higher in Gosanchon of Mankyung River and in Jungamchon, Whangryonggang and Jiseokchon of Youngsan River. Diversity index was significantly correlated with forest area or housing area at the 5% level. The results indicate that the destruction of forest area should be suppressed and pollutant loading should be decreased for an improvement of water quality and a maintenance of high species diversity in polluted watersheds.
